Phitsanulok 80 rice was obtained from a three-way cross between Suphanburi 90 and IR56 rice varieties and RD27 in 1991 and 1992 at the Phitsanulok Rice Research Center. The first generation hybrid was planted in 1993. The second generation hybrid was selected as a bulk type and the third to fifth generation hybrids as a pedigree type in 1994-1997, resulting in the PSL92147-1-2-4 variety. The variety was planted for study in 1998 and for yield comparison within the station in 1999 at the Phitsanulok Rice Research Center. Imported for planting to compare yields between stations during 2000-2005 at the Rice Research Centers of Phitsanulok, Chainat and Lopburi. Planted for comparison of yields in Narathiwat during 2001-2003 at Phitsanulok, Phichit, Lopburi, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Phetchabun and Singburi provinces. Tested for response to nitrogen fertilizer rates during 2002-2003 at the Rice Research Centers of Phitsanulok, Chainat and Lopburi. Tested for yield stability together with the Rice Research Centers of Pathum Thani, Khlong Luang, Chachoengsao, Suphanburi and Ratchaburi in 2002, 2004 and 2005. The Executive Committee of the Department of Agriculture resolved to approve the certified variety, named Phitsanulok 80, on 23 April 2007.
